hydrangea problems
in Plants
Hi. I've got a few Hyrangea, some in pots and some in the ground. I have worked out that those in the pots are getting too much sun and the leaves are healthy, but not as dark a green as previously. Also, the colours have changed either turning pinkish or much lighter in colour. Please can you give me some advice? The main ones affected are Kardinal Violet, Fireworks Blue and Korea. TIA

If they are in pots could you not move them into a shadier area ?
Blue flowering Hydrangeas need an acid soil to grow in or else they will change colour. What compost did you use to pot them up in ?
If you didn't use ericacaious compost you could try keeping the colour blue by feeding regularly with ericacaious feed and Hydrangea colourant.
I have a south facing garden with plenty of hydrangeas in pots and in the ground, and those that are protected from the mid day sun do better and flower earlier. They are thirsty and hungry plants so if in pots you will need to feed it and water well. Mine looked like they weren't going to survive after the cold winds in the winter and spring but with a bit of attention and feed they've perked up and flowering. The leaves aren't dark green but look fresh and have lost the yellowy brown from being wind scorched. Most of mine are also pink hydrangeas but they are not as dark pink as they used to be. Try not to water with tap water as they do better with rain water. If you want to maintain the blue flowers you will need to get a colourant and feed it well and ensure it is in the correct compost which is well drained to ensure a healthy colourful plant. You see these everywhere in Cornwall so they must like the free draining soil there which is ericacious. However mine that are in the ground are in clay soil but enriched with added compost and they still do ok but much paler flowers!! Good luck.
