Purchased Small Bonsai Tree

Hiya, today I purchased a small bonsai tree from the local garden centre as id thought id have a go at maintaining and caring for one. However, I'm not really sure how, and I have no idea what type of tree it is.

It is labelled as "small bonsai with rock" very useful. It is also 4 years old if that is any help.

Here are some pictures.

A lot of bonsai purchased in garden centres are mass produced and don't make good specimens. If you are serious about keeping bonsai you would be well advised to get a book on the subject which will show you how to care for your tree and how to slowly manipulate it so that it grows into a miniature version of a mature plant. It isn't just a matter of keeping it in a tiny pot. The roots need to be pruned at regular intervals.

They are quite tricky things to look after and are easily killed off (I know this from bitter experience) and they are best kept outdoors if you don't want your tree to dry out and turn into something brown.

  • I used to grow bonsai but now I've acquired a larger know garden I don't have time.

I would advise to check and see if there is a local bonsai group near you they would be only too pleased to share their knowledge , it's such a interesting way to grow plants.

Not all bonsai are for outside growing, depending on which plant it is depends on where you grow it.

Bonsais for outside are much easier to grow than indoor ones.
