Rootballed laurel

Hi, I live in France and just bought some rootballed laurels which I have planted on day they arrived yesterday.  I am looking at care and now find that they should have been planted by end of March.... Obviously I should have known this before ordering but assumed that if they are on sale they are OK to be planted.... there was no info on the French site to say that it was too late to plant them.  Am I destined for dead plants?  If I really water them well eavh day will they survive?  Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciate by this gardening novice.... Thank you

by root balled do you mean they had a bare root ball covered in cloth rather than in a pot, or they were in a pot, left too long and had formed a root ball/potbound?

  • Hi, they were a root surrounded by soil and then a hessian netting.  No pot.  Thx

usually plants are only sold in root balls like that during the non-growing period (because otherwise they dry out too quickly) but I suppose this is France so it might be different.

Anyway, give them a damn good soak, stick them in a bucket of water for an hour or so should do it before planting,

get them in the ground ASAP, don't remove the hessian because this will rot in the ground,

once in the ground make sure you water them well, every day if its hot (more than 20 degrees), every other day if its below 20 degrees.

  • Hi, thanks.  I expect they were hoping for a numpty like me who didn't know better...... Anyway I did the soaking bit and planted them immediately and have watered them well, immediately and today.  I did remove the hessian because I didn't realise I could leave it but it cane off easily so  Didn't damage the roots.  I will just keep my fingers crossed.  Thanks for for kind advice
