Weed membrane

Hello. I'm very new to gardening and am planning on putting some stones on a little area once I've cleared all the weeds.
I've been given some damp proof membrane and just wondered if this does the same job as the weed membrane?
I'm not plamining on ever planting anything in the area again so not bothered about the soil underneath being ruined.
Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you. ????

Not ideal for the garden as it does sour the soil but if you're going ahead with your plan you could always fork a few holes in it.
