but you then need to use more virgin material to replace the carton. In the garden the carton will degrade in the sun, break down and end up in landfill or as bits of micro plastic littered about the place.

As we discussed in the other thread, plant pots are largely not recycled but are UV stable and opaque which is better for plant root health, so they're a better thing to keep reusing in the garden if you can. Put a wanted post on freecycle or gumtree for pots of the size you need before thinking about the reuse of other containers.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Remember all the people who dont bother to recycle anything, I started 40 years ago, long before it was "green" etc, then watched my local authority put everything into the same dustcart, was furious after spending 2 weeks washing out tins, including dog and cat food, they denied it, offered photo evidence, they said yes it doesn go in together, but sorted out their end, asked why I had to put it all in separate containers then, got the waffle, no straight answer.  Then watched Fiona Phillips BBC1, with the container ships of recycling from SE UK going to Indonesia.

If you had a container ship full of junk and you were in the middle of the ocean without a moral compass, what would you do?
