Pulling up garlic

Torg22Torg22 Posts: 302

Hi,

It wont be long until the leaves on my garlic plants go yellow and it will be time to pull them up.

Can anyone tell me what the next stage would be re: drying/storage etc.. How long can you store garlic for anyway?

I lifted mine last night as the bottom three leaves had crisped up,

decent sized bulbs, they're drying on a wire rack outside in the sun, after a couple of days the tops will be taken off leaving about 3 inches of stalk on the bulb.

hardneck garlic keeps for 3 months or so. I usually eat some 'green' and then pickle the rest. Softneck garlic keeps for 6 months or longer- as treehugger says, dry it in the sun for a few days, then trim the tops but not too short (I usually leave nearer 6 inches of stalk), then you can do a fancy french plait or just hang them up somewhere cool, dry and dark. Either type can be frozen, I think

Damn! I thought I could grow and store a years worth.  Better start eating it faster then. I never know where to store anything, and lost a lot of onions last year. I don't have anywhere that doesnt bake when it gets hot.
