Bamboo
youProblem with bamboo leaves going brown
Posted: 15/6/17
Hi everyone,
I'm new to gardeners world so here's hoping for some advice from you far more experienced gardeners.
I removed a lot of bamboo as the dead leaves and shoots were taking over and were totally overgrown.
Two months ago I bought three new plants about 8ft tall and to control them put them in pots in the ground with drain holes. The top leaves and stem turned brown so I cut the bottoms off the pots to give more drainage and put them back in the ground.
It's now June 2017 and hot, and unfortunately there's no change to the brown tops. Lower down seems healthy. Should I remove the pots altogether? I would be grateful for any advice.
Many Thanks Terry

A pic would help, but it sounds like a lack of water is a distinct possibility.
If your plants are in pots, even if the surrounding area is damp, it doesn't mean that the soil in the pots is damp and your plants may only be getting a little water from roots coming from the open pot bottom.

I put a similar post on here, depends on the variety, if you want to remove them from their pots, make sure (a lot of bamboo hates on the forum LOL) I bought a nigra, also in a pot, gather they need a HUGE amount of water, dont give them more drainage, they need less, ours thankully (cos they aint cheap are they, this size!) We re-potted it cut off the dead stuff, and daily does of copius amounts of water!
Thank you Pete8, Nanny Beach and Philippa Smith2,
Yes there are lots of new shoots so I think I will lift them (again) and take them out of the pots to re plant with plenty of water. I believe mine are "Nigra" which have black canes although some are green! You are right Nanny, (They aint cheap lol) Nor is water these days!!
Thank you all so much, I'll keep you informed.
Oh, stoppit!!! I have 5 water butts, you can use grey water. Ooooh, you are hard philippa, (but correct though LOL)
PS use the old canes as plant supports
new canes on the "Nigra" come thru dark green
My lat Father gave us 4, we put them in huge pots, unfortunately, ran out of space in the removal lorry (which was huge) when we move here and had to leave them behind. I have a little Japanese area acers, dry riverbed, 3 bamboos, to try and blot out an ugly block of flats nearby, hubby made a little wooden bridge painted red, lantern and lion.
I have SERIOUS garden envy doghouse!!!!!!
