Are they just getting plenty of food 'au naturel' Hosta? I'd imagine they would in your plot. Perhaps they just don't need the extras.
Did that one look unwell do you think?  :/
Oh Anni- it's like having small children again, isn't it? I worried terribly when the ones that moved in here departed as they got older, but the joy and relief when they started coming back in each night to guddle about for food  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

We had new neighbours who might well be feeding them too but it just seems odd that we had any number of different sized hogs as regular as clockwork and now nothing.

@Fairygirl, l found myself waking up now and again and thinking "Has he been?", a bit like a spiky Father Christmas ! I had hoped to go to our local rescue open day today, but have had a migraine and don't really feel up to it. Had hoped to ask the lady who runs it what she thought., but it sounds like Hostafan's hogs have disappeared as well, maybe they know something we don't !
  • We have just rescued a dear little hedgehog that was out in full sun with two large tics on it's back.  The hoglet had been feeding from the food bowl each night for the past week - I wasn't sure what to do with it this afternoon but the rescue centre are very good and they suggested we took it in to them. I do hope it survives the winter in their care.

That's good Guernsey Donkey2, you did the right thing  :) Our local rescue has loads of hoglets in at the moment, including a group of seven (!) who were found when an old shed was removed, mum had disappeared. These rescues do such a fantastic job.

Hi Diana, the general advice is, if you see a hedgehog out during the day, it could well be struggling,  particularly if it's staggering about. The exception may be a mum out and about during the nesting season (l think). If it was moving pretty fast, it's possible something or someone disturbed it. If you are in any doubt, you can contact your local rescue, if you don't have one, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) can help. You'll find lots of info on their website
    https://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk
    Hope this helps  :)

At least you tried to do something, putting water out is a good start. I take it you didn't see it again, so it probably was fine. Our hedgehog (s)  disappeared a few weeks ago, they tend to do this from time to time l find. They are a worry, that's for sure !

We rescued one back in the Spring that was out in the front garden @6am when it was light, a couple of magpies were showing interest in it. Our local rescue couldn't take it until later in the day,so we put it in a box with a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, some food and water. Managed to resist checking on it every 5 minutes. My OH said it was like having a baby in the house !
  • I have a passion for hedgehogs but keeping one in the house....? My cousin kept a rabbit in her home that rewarded her by nibbling through the electric cables - don't panic though as it lived another day!
