  • Ours come just after dark - around 8 - 8.30 - we have been seeing three at a time recently which is good and although we don't want to see smaller ones now with winter drawing closer, we are disappointed to have only had two youngsters this year.

Our local hedgehog rescue is having an open day this weekend and l took some plants over for them to sell. Hoping to have a word with the lady who runs it, but no luck. Guess l will just keep putting the food out for a couple more nights just in case, l see the forecast is for cooler weather from Friday.
  • Anni D I don't know where you are based, but I will definitely be feeding my hogs until well into November as I did last year - and they were back eating here by February this year regardless of snow and frost. My tortoises don't hibernate until late October/November, although they do stop eating a few weeks before we put them in their winter home (in the house loft). Please don't give up on yours just yet.

@Guernsey Donkey2, l am in Gloucestershire.  No visitor again last night, but it was very chilly again. Quite foggy this morning. I will keep an eye on the forecast to see if the temperatures go up a bit, and see if l can get some dry food from somewhere.  Can't let the hogs down !  :)
  • We make sure there’s always some cat biscuits in the feeding station ... I’ve known hogs turn up on milder nights in the middle of winter.

Not just the milder nights. We had visitors all through last winter even when several degrees below. Here's one at -2C but they came on even colder nights.

I'm just hoping they're okay - it's such a worry when they disappear. Off to buy some cat biscuits later. I have a bit of dog food left, so that will go out tonight.
  • Put the porch light on to put bins out last night and nearly stepped on one just outside the door. Nice big sized hog running around at about 8pm early for mine. Haven't seen one for a couple of weeks, so don't worry @AnniD they are probably filling up on slugs now.
