I have no germination of delphs so far, but it's totally my own fault for sowing too early when I have no heat mat, though I have seen one for £15 so I may just have to invest.....they've been on top of a radiator for a few says, but light not great...I do need that heat mat don't I?!

Delphiniums germinate cold. As do most of that family image

ah... I've never had great success... I use west facing windowsill in attic..wonder what I'm doing wrong? only managed to get 2 viable seedlings last year out of 2 packets!

Hi rosemummy, I've grown delphs from seed but like nut says they germinate better in cool conditions. You could sow them in trays or pots and just leave them outside. Also try to sow them shallowly, just a sprinkling of compost over the seeds should do the trick. Good luck image

thanks fishy, Lyn kindly sent me seeds for white ones, hers look gorgeous, they are sown quite shallowly, I sowed almost 2weeks ago, I've covered with cling film, i did have on top of very cool radiator, but have moved back to windowsill, have I messed about with them too much now or should I keep hoping?!

Maybe Fishy is right by putting them outside, I haven't done that, I wait for the seedling  to show them put them in out in the cold GH.  No one covers them or gives them warmth when they self seed in the garden.

Try a few both ways, see what works for you, but they don't need a radiator or a propagator.

thanks Lyn have left on windowsill, just looked at delphinium society's advice , they say cover with soil, alternatively sprout on damp kitchen paper in a box then plant up those that germinate, will try that

Good advice from Lyn there rosemummy. To give an example of how hardy delphs are, in autumn of 2014 I sowed some outside on the garden table as I didn't have a greenhouse then. They germinated into little plants and survived the whole winter out there, no cover at all.

The only problem with them is their ability to attract slugs from miles around. Slugs just adore them. I only plant them in tubs now because of that and sprinkle salt around the bases.
