As a biologist I have to correct the misbelief that birds are not animals. Life on earth can be divided broadly into three categories Animals; Plants and Indeterminates. If you are not a plant you are an animal. The indeterminates are things such as fungi and various microbes. Even fleas are animals!
I remember my pupils being quite affronted when I told them they were animals until I explained - then they were happy.

Second answer of yours works Tetters.
I wondered about the animal thing but couldn't come up with an antipedant strategy
Still think I'm right with 100 pigs. The wording of the puzzle doesn't say the farmer has to buy assorted animals.
It's designed to make you over think the answer, like "As I was going to St Ives".
Have fun with the numbers if you think I'm wrong
Nodding off on the sofa, so I'll call it a night
That's 161 'animals'
I'm rubbish at numbers

Well done MU
How did you do it -algebra -guesswork?
What's this 'indeterminate'? If you have a bunch of things you can't define then the definition lacks definition.
Precisely
So you had to Google it Hazel? I never even thought of 'cheating'
You haven't had a go at your puzzle yet.
