Houseplant suggestions....

Hi

I have a basement flat with shallow windowsills that are not suitable for light loving plants.  Can anyone suggest some plants which would thrive in a place with low light levels and if you have any care tips too, much welcomed!

Thanks

  • Thank you Pansyface, I love your message image

  • I've always found that peace lillies work well in shadey places as do parlour palms such as Chamaedorea elegans.  They tend to get sunburn easily.

Ivy and spider plants tolerate alot of condiitons.

Ive read that Phalaenopsis orchids do fine on north facing windowsills so I am trying that with a few of mine.

It really depends on hw shadey the windowsil is. Does it get any direct sun during the day, does it appear brighter at times or is it in shadow all day?

  • I can vouch for Peace Lilies loving shade ........ I also have a Christmas cactus happily inhabiting a north facing window and a Kalanchoe in the same aspect in an otherwise dark bathroom ............ all flower beautifully image

  • Thank you so much for all your suggestions! I am adding them to my list image

Rainbow fish the windowsills are really not deep enough to put a plant pot on so I will have to find alternative spots in the rooms,  Parts of the room will get some direct sunlight for an hour or two during the day as it moves around. I will definitely try the orchids image

Hostafan1, I am big fern fan so  I will see which ones might cope being indoors. They are an obvious choice now you mention it!
