it must have been subliminal. I went to the garden centre for a weed extracter, and came out with 2 crocosmias......along with a geum, a stokesia, some sage , and a load of packets of veg seed reduced to 50p a packet.  I got back to find 10 free packets of seed from T&M (telegraph offer) which included 2 more packets of courgette seed.

Good job courgette seeds keep for a long time.

and a weed extracter. Its called a neverbend root breaker. After trying to dig out one teasel, I'm going to need it. Its like a narrow spade but forged steel and with a steel shafted long handle. I'd never seen one before, but I saw it a couple of months ago, and was musing over it, but then I decided I needed the right tool for the job.

I'll look out for that. It might help with the (non giant) hogweed. OH made a sharp V-shaped tool that he used to cut out the giant hogweed. I don't have the arm strength to shove it in. The soil in the meadow is about 60 years compacted

looks good. might have to get OH to weld on something to put a foot on for extra force though

The shaft is longer than a normal spade for extra leverage. I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know.
