  • Thanks for the thread again David I'm thinkin of sowing my sweet peas soon,

Temps seem to be gradually on the dip!
  • Have sown my sweet peas, my dad always did it at this time. Have sown loads cos our daughter getting married next summer and wants jugs of garden flowers on the tables. Our garden is usually open for one afternoon in summer (village gardens) but next year will probably have loads of wigwams for sweet peas so might have to give it a miss and concentrate on growing more flowers.

  • The heavens have just opened here and it's throwing it down. not seen rain like this for a long time. Our road, on a slight slope, is awash.

I grew this SP for the first time this year & can thoroughly recommend it for scent, cut flowers or exhibition.

Thinking about it, they look quite similar to these 'Dot Com' That I've grown for several years.

Whoops....the first ones were 'Ballerina Blue'. image

  • Stunning as always David, I hope I get something half as good as those!
  • Do you sow in pots or straight into the ground ?

I always sow mine in cardboard rolls (toilet paper) which I collect over the year.

It works fine, I just put them in the ground in spring with the roll, so the roots are not disturbed and they grow happily along and the cardboard just disperse.

I tried last spring to sow directly in the ground, it worked fine as well, they just flowered a little bit later.

  • Myself, I start them off in deep pots anytime during the next couple of weeks.

Having said that, it perfectly possible to sow the seed directly, where they are to flower, in the autumn....doing this does have its downside as the young shoots are vulnerable to slugs & birds.

  • Hi, I attempting to grow sweet peas for the first time, some trailing ones for my baskets and pots. Just read an article on growing them and it says to soak overnight or make a small incision in the seeds before sowing but on the pkt it doesn't mention this. What is the best way to sow them please, many thanks.
