Hi Liri image trees really are beautiful in all their shapes and sizes. It is said that before humans intervened,a squirrel could travel from Land's End to John O'Groats without touching the ground. Not sure whether that's true or whether the squirrel stopped off at motorway service stations image

I've heard that too - it was on one of Mr T's programmes.

I think Liriodendron's a lovely name - trips off the tongue image

    - but too long to type every time so it'll definitely get shortened to Liri! image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Liriodendron's a lovely tree too!  image  Fantastic leaves as well as flowers.  I used to make greetings cards with prints of leaves on - the tulip tree was one of the leaves I chose.  Yes Fishy, I'd heard the squirrel story too...  round here lots of native trees have been planted in the past few years, up the cloughs and valleys, to slow down flash floods.  Maybe in 50 years or so the squirrels will be able to get a bit further without touching the ground here in Calderdale.

Hi Lily!  Thankyou for your welcome.  image   I love lilies too, but don't grow them at the moment because of lily beetle.  image  Philippa, no Reds since we left Northumberland I'm afraid - such a shame, they're lovely little things.

  • Lily beetles and general tiredoutness have just about done for my lilies, so I won't be dabbling with them anymore. They don't pass my cost/benefit test where I weigh up the pleasure I get against the work and bother involved. Did you know that 20 years ago lily beetles were a rare sight? Although they are lilies Agapanthus seem to be immune to them here, even where they share a pot. In the latter case a single agapanthus , planted in a small space with 6 lily bulbs has noe all but taken over.  The cuckoo in the nest.image I now grow loads of Agapanthus and the produce lots of babies for me to grow my collection and give away to mates.

I've about given up with lilies too WW.I have just one tub of them and they are poor, sickly plants these days with the constant battering from lily beetles.

Agapanthus are in the family Amaryllidaceae, and lilies are in the family Liliaceae which is why lily beetles don't eat agapanthus
