I've been looking out my kitchen window in the morning before going to work for days, trying to work out what the splash of red is in my potted Yucca, and just thought it was a bit of a possie of blown of leaves from a Red Robin in the neighbours garden. Tonight decided to have a look and found it is in the process of sending up a flower! So excited. I've had this Yucca in a pot for at least 10 years, and this is the first time it's done it. And must say I had to cut a large number of leaves from it due to Yucca black spot and hardly watered it this year!
Winters, do you find that sisyrinchium always has a 'burnt' look after it has flowered?
Yes, the stems and seed-heads turn black and last all winter which I don't mind in my Death garden .
I truly adore this plant, its subtly is really stunning and I'm a sucker for spiky leaves but it's only fault is the die-back on the leaves by the end of winter. Kniphofia leaves are easy to pull away when they go over and many other plants that do the same, but these prove problematic as too much pulling disturbs the roots. I tried giving a second clump a crew-cut earlier in the year to test the plant's regrowth rate but that didn't work so my only method is snipping individual leaves with scissors.
Yucca flowers are a bit like Marmite, you either love them or hate them.
Fraid I'm a little bit of a hater although I adore the spike before it opens. I just think they look too weird but am extremely happy for you Tim Burr to achieve this maturity in your Yucca
No, it just lives outside in its pot all year round. I occasionally move it around the garden, normally as a 'elf and safety issue as the leaves are at perfect height for poking eye out when working near it.

Wow - look forward to the photo of it opened.
I had a yucca which I had to get rid of earlier in the year. Too spicky for such a small area. I will miss the flowers.

Yucca looking good. Does it get protection in the winter?
