John H, why not do some 'before and after' photos of the patio?

I may do, I'll take few today & see how I feel when the job is complete. JH

Here are some photosof my peone's. The first one to open was Buckeye Belle, followed by Coral Charm and today Bowl of Beauty has opened its first flower

How stunning! Peonies are one of my favourite flowers but I don't grow any myself image

Oh they are just gorgeous. My 4 are all inherited from years back, all deep red velvety, lovely but nothing like yours.

Some combinations that seem to be working at the moment...

I seem to gravitate towards yellow and pink combinations so long as the pinks are not too strong image The heucheras above have spent two years in pots waiting to be placed and I think I might have finally done this...just need to compare them later in the year when the pink combo of Echinacea and Liatris bloom in front of the poppies which will have gone over by then image Still don't know what to under-plant poppies with that die an ugly death in summer image

I'm really enjoying the top combination of Sisyrinchium and Euphorbia Silver Swan and the wall of yellow Geum I have at the moment that isn't working in the opposite border but seems to belong with these guys. (there is a wilting spring at the back that I cut off to see what it looked like) Looking forward to seeing this border mature a bit.

Also loving the second combo of Black Elder under-planted with some Sedum Angeline. It's the first year I've seen the Elder flower and it is still a twig at the moment, but the potential is there image

Not so pleased with my Lavender this year that kind of flopped. Half of it died and the other half is being out shone by the thyme that is flowering its head off. I plan to increase this simple but beautiful frothy plant and the bees love it image

wintersong - every inch of your garden looks beautiful.

I only became a GW member recently but I'm learning so much - thanks everyone.

Thank you for the comments. I have never been able to grow peone before. I think the soil here really suits them. The Coral Charm one spent last winter in apot so was very surprised at it flowering. Soil also seems to suit Iris.

Like you Wintersong, I am hoping I have the right things taking over and like you am wondering what I can do to 'tart' up the poppies once they have died down

My sambuca also has flowers for first time but it is in a semi-wild area so it looks established (it isn't) only its 2nd year - planted early spring last year. Can't wait fro it to grow large

Sorry the picture is not very good.

I wanted to show my salvia hot lips and the label. I bought it last year with red and white (right of pic)  flowers , so was confused when it started flowering all red (main pic) this year.  A few googles later and it seems this is what it likes to do - when it's hotter (fingers crossed) it becomes 2 coloured, and if very hot it will be all white (Probably a bit too much to ask this year).

Love it even more now I understand that it's mum mischievous streak!
