Help me identify this please

this cute little red leaved sprout has been popping up through the grass since i brought my property last year. my wife asked me to mow around it to see if it would turn out to be something nice.

thats pretty awquard to do so ive just been mowing it down.

I noticed a few more little sprouts about and got a little curious, so thought i should try and dig them up and move them off the lawn.

Well!!! it turns out this cute little red sprout is actually a monster, networking its way under my lawn like something of of the film tremors.

I would really like some help identifying it and some advise on how to kill it with out digging up the lawn.

it doesnt grow in a zigzag fashion like knotweed.

It's a tree sucker, a poplar by the look of it.

What to do about it. Hmm.

Can you identify the tree? If it's gone, (which is often the case, chopping trees down stimulates them to drastic action), you're safe to spot treat the suckers with a weedkiller. Treating the suckers will affect the tree if it's still there

I've got cherry suckers all over my lawn CR. and alder suckers on another patch of grass. After time they form a knot of growth that stands proud of the lawn, that's when it becomes a nuisance.

But I'd rather have those than JKW or mare's tailimage

  • Thank you for your speedy replies.

Both me and my neighbour have been digging up a few of these roots in hope to stop it. our next door but one neighbours garden is overgrown n possibly the source.

Im going to head out and get some serious weed killer and give that a shot.
