Hi Lyn - no, that's from my garden. They've totally obscured the brown fence that was behind them now, and I've added the light wood panelling to the ugly wall that was there previously. This was them 2 months ago:
What I meant was the new panelling is much higher than the wall, so there's about a foot of bush that is hidden.
yep - chuffed with them now. Only worry now is how to keep them tidy!
That hedge looks fantastic now ... I had to look back to your photos on the first page just to check that it had been as I'd remembered .............. see, we were right weren't we And we're turning you into a gardener too
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I have planted a long row of cherry laurel and have been following all your posts especially the advice given given to befuddled. I did everything you said, cut them down, munched etc. I now a huge problem with something eating them. The leaves have huge holes in them and some web like substance on them. Also some Brown marks. I have cut them.all back again but I suspect vine weevil. Can somebody please advise me how to get rid of them if indeed that is the problem
Looks like vine weevil to me. We had a bad infestation when we moved to this garden. We used nematodes ... two applications exactly as directed on the pack ... that was at least three years ago and no damage to speak of since ... as soon as I notice any I'll get another pack. August is a good time to apply the treatment.
Dovefromabove.. I posted a pic exactly like that (see below) on 2nd and 9th July 2016, and people were saying it was shot hole. In fact you said then not to worry about it.
Can't see how these are different !?
Either way it hasn't slowed my growth down. I chose in 2016 to lop off the shrivelled ends, and I've done the same this weekend in 2017.
Befuddled I think I was responding to the suggestion that fungicide was necessary. Several people had already said they were pretty sure there was some evidence of Shot Hole disease. As you say, your hedge managed perfectly well without fungicide.
Yes, there looks as if there may be a bit of vine weevil nibbling there too ... but not so much that I'd be worried about it.
As I said in my post above, we had a very bad infestation ... some shrubs' leaves were almost skeletons ... the garden was overgrown and had been neglected for some years.

Sorry but I'm still confused. Which is it most likely to be? Shot hole or vine weedle. This is the row of plants I put in a few months ago and the were doing really well. Then all of a sudden and quite quickly the leaves went all hole and looked an eyesore. It also seemed to be stunting the growth. Have i done the right thing cutting them back and what else would you suggest
Oh and befuddled your hedge looks brilliant. I'm aiming to grow mine to the top of the fencing behind it . Hope I have as much success as yours. And as quickly!!
