Growing Sweet Peas

  • Thanks, rosemummy......on reflection, perhaps I shouldn't have said anything. The request was from Eagle SPs, probably on of the best sweet pea specialist growers in the country, who are local to me and good friends.

They have a long list and in all probability (if I accept) can take years to happen....depending on the number of their new introductions.

I'm familiar with most of the origins of most of Eagle's names, most are the names of family members & friends.

How lovely - and well-deserved David image  Have you any idea of the colour you will be?

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

What  a lovely honour to receive David image

Dove - I reckon David's flower will be like him - rich, sumptuous, mysterious and perhaps.....frilly...imageimage

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Not a clue, Dove.....it all depends how successful there are at developing new varieties....I would rather it would have red in its base colour.

Erm image not sure where I'm portraying this 'frilly' side of my persona, F.

I think I should clear something up, that has been on my mind for a little while now. It's regarding my always recommending Eagle Sweet Peas....I have to assure people that in my own experience they are probably one of the best sweet specialists in the country and the quality of their seed and choice of varieties are the very best.

However (as I have mentioned previously) their nursery (not open to the public) is local to me and I know the family well, this doesn't mean that I would seek free publicity for them, or would I recommend them if their product was anything less than I claim.

There are about six top sweet specialists out there, one is Matthewmans who I would also recommend.

My little Eagle Sp's (I can't remember which ones but have sown 3 varieties around 6 canes,  3 different colours to compliment each other) have almost all germinated, I think the ones that haven't may have been disturbed (flaming hounds!!!!).  They are now growing nicely and with the warm weather today and big rain shower we have just had they should be shooting up in no time image

I forgot to ask for my discount but will remember next time image

  • *For the most part I usually have sweet peas to cut in May from my autumn sowings...but as I have said here many times, they are also over by late August/early September... they peak in July, after that the stems begin to shorten.  Alternatively, those from spring sowings will flower between July and the onset of winter frosts.

So a good plan is to sow at both times for a continuation of cut flowers from May onwards.

*This is important for me, as most sweet pea shows are held from mid to late summer.
