smallswan, I am on a small island on the west coast of Canada, between Vancouver and Victoria. It is the warmest climate in Canada, with weather that sounds similar to yours. At present we a dealing with a plague of tent caterpillars. They are at a high point in a 7 year cycle, and do much damage, particularly to fruit trees and roses, although they seem to really like my witch hazel as well. Some places on the island the trees are completely bare of leaves. I have been relatively lucky, as I have few host trees. But I patrol several times a day. And yes, Kate, we have a post office in one of the stores. Most businesses take debit and/or credit cards.Population is about 1500.

Lottie, digging really, more like mud pie making here.
Tonight I shall mostly be eating chicken korma and flicking through channels
Roast chicken here
Sotongeoff: I draw the line at bringing you a chicken korma patsy: how about a bacon and egg one? Apparently they are quite good.
There's a duck in my garden: perhaps he's heard about the slug buffet. He's welcome.
Blimey -that was a quick trip -did you cram it all in?-what was the food and attactions like?how was the traffic and weather?
Kate, have sandy soil at the plot which drains very quickly, so it wasn't too much like a mud bath. Would be a totally different story on clay soil.
Smallswan, lucky you, maybe your slug problem will be sorted?
A bacon and egg pasty , sacrilege.
Now Lottie are you having Mississippi Mud pies at the party?
Am fed, watered and now reduced to songs around the piano as my tv world has deserted me,
