I have also been watching  'A mothers son'  I quite enjoyed it, you always wonder in these cases if people have an inkling.

I have just been snailing, they were sitting there eating away not even bothering to be discreet, I hope that they enjoyed their last supper.

Pam thanks I am going to give the cuttings a try, just wondered if you had any special tips. I really struggle with those rectangular trays, I feel like I am missing a trick. They make so much sense but the plants I put in them never seem to grow as fast as in round pots.

  • Morning all, up bright and early this morning, well early, but not very bright! Woke up and couldn't get back to sleep, I think my brain is putting me in training for going back to work next week. No lotto win at the weekend, so it looks as though I will have to go back.

I don't do well with cuttings, Kate, but I'm going to try some penstemons. I used to grow lots of fuchsias and they took really easily in water, but tend not to grow things that aren't hardy nowadays.
  • Good morning image

I hate trying to get back into a routine after a holiday, brain not switching off in the evening and not turning back on in the morning.

Came home from work yesterday to find my OH's cousin has sprayed weed killer over my wild section of the garden, it was starting to attract bees and butterflies as wellimage

Hope all is well in your little worlds

Good morning all . We are back to normal here with the rain but at least we have had 2 good days and  I have managed to get all he jobs done in the garden. Just the tulips to plant now but its too early yet.

I had the best nights sleep ever last night but still a bit stiff . I was out all day yesterday pottering around and even have a little bit of sunburn.

Glyn , I remember Pam saying she mixed perlite in her cutting mix. I 've never done this but I'm going to give it a try.

Flo - I would be missing Twinks too but you've tried your best . Maybe someone will come forward last minute.

Oh, Dan, what a terrible shame for your wildlife :- (

This is the second September I haven't had to go back to work. I have to say the relief is enormous although for most of my career I looked forward to getting to know a new class and starting new projects.

    Have a good day everyone.

Dan now you know why I do not let anyone else in my garden, that must be so frustrating.

Glyn  has your penstemon flowered as I am still waiting for mine to flower?

I looks like it is going to be a pleasant day today.

  • It's a nice morning here, and the forecast is nice for the foreseeable future.

Had to take my car for service and MOT first thing, and left it at the garage, and had a walk back. One of the few opportunities I get to peer into everyone's gardens as I walked back. It is interesting to see what a variety of styles there are in the area. A few are quite attractive, the cosmos are doing well; a few have completely plain lawn (which actually looks rather unsightly when the lawn is different shades of green in different patches); and there's the odd garden largely tarmaced, or paved, or pebbled, effectively just a car park.

Didn't see any hollyhocks. People really ought to be growing more of those by their front doors.

Walked past a bit of municipal planting - nettles (!), thistles and big yellow verbascums, very progressive, I like it; not sure what other residents make of it.

One unusual item I saw was where someone had had a large ash tree cut down. The stump of about 6 feet had been left, and the tree surgeon had cleverly carved it into the shape of some kind of animal, somewhat like a huge owl.

  • Some more non-stop begonias I'm growing....called 'Apple Blossom' this time:

  • Jean perlite is just an expensive substitute for grit, much lighter of course which some prefer. I found that even mixed into the compost once used as a mulch it separated and lay on top of the soil like snow, I use half grit and half compost for cuttings and never cover them.
Flobear, my Grandson starts the big school today in his new uniform, my Daughter had instructions. "do not pick me up in front of the school, do not get out of the car and hug me or hold my hand, and if you try to kiss me I am off" I guess he feels grown up then. That is the one who won the last night at the old school dancing competition in Modern, Latin and also the disco, His partner takes lessons and picked him to dance with although he does not go to lessons. I was the same age when I started dancing and always picked the best dancer, looks did not come into it.
Gary, variety is the spice of life, if we all had the same gardens it would be bordom on a grand scale, I love shades of green they should write a song about it.

    Frank.
