Re birches and viburnums - I know nothing about viburnums, and wouldn't attempt to disagree with those who do. I do know about birches. The first photo does show a young birch tree (they have brown bark and a very straight stem). The second and third photos look very similar. The tree with the white trunk is definitely birch.

I suppose the question is - what is the green shoot next to the base of the tree in photos 2 and 3. To me, that looks like a weed or wildflower!

Mr Google says there are at least two kinds of snowball - Viburnum macrocephalum and Viburnum opulus. The leaves of Viburnum macrocephalum can be seen here:

They have a far smoother edge than yours. The leaves of Viburnum opulus can be seen here:

That has a maple-leaf shape about it, and looks rather similar to yours. Though many plants have similar leaves, such as hardy geraniums. TBH, I don't know.

Hi Jean! I'm also a newbie to the forums, and gardening as well, but unlike yourself, I AM a cyber stalker, and always follow this lots' conversation on this thread as they all make me laugh, which is great. The silliness is good. I've rarely got anything worthwhile to add though, so keep quite most the time.

But at least you overcome your shyness by posting! image

Kate, you're very wise not to go in for pets, they wreck the garden and stop you having impromptu holidays. Since I last posted chickens are down to 2 as I took poorly Lizzie to the vet and now she is no more :- (
