My lilies aren't even showing yet but the tulips, crocus and dafs are just starting.

Blimey Bill, where do you live - the Orkneys?

My lilies are up and running, but I have yet to see a lily beetle up here in Lancashire. I had plenty last year so I'm not holding my breath ....

There's only one good thing about lily beetles - their colour!!

DD, you could try putting them on the birdtable and see what happens but brightly coloured insects are displaying a warning  "I taste nasty or am poisonous" so I wouldn't expect them to be taken.

Ah, I suppose he won't be around at the moment to see my post then!

Sorry Bill, assumed you were from Blighty. Your bulbs may be late, but you have great skiing over there. I skied in Banff about 10 years running - super place.

Has the lily beetle arrived in Canada yet Bill?

  • I don't know if I'm seeing things but since I put some garlic bulbs in the pot with my lilies no lily beetle can someone else try it and see if they have same reaction ( yust a thought).
  • Lancashire Lass Banff is a nice place but about 4 days away from me by car,I live in Southern Ontario (Toronto) turn my first name around. We are still waiting for the frost to leave the ground.

  • Cwoodward, any special preparation required with the garlic bulbs, or just pop one in the pot as it is?

Found my first little red devil today so I used my usual trick of holding a small pot underneat (to catch the buggers when they drop) and giving it a prod with a stick.

Time consuming, but effective....there is now a small red smuge on the patio!!

The garlic would save time though if it prevents the rascals appearing.

  • We had been plagued with lily beetles for years and kept losing our large corms, last year we watered nemetodes onto the containers twice during the growing season and have successfully overwintered and grown on some magnificent plants, will do this again.

We are so pleased with the result, and so simple to do.

    Derek.

  • Little laurel no just pop any old garlic bulb in to pot, went out today to see if any blighters were about yes there was but sitting on other pots away from lilies coincidence or what lily beetle 0 me 3 fingers crossed.
