My Grandaughter arrived telling me she had been learning people songs "err do you mean Folk songs" yes what did you think I meant, do not argue with a ten year old. What I asked "My Bonnie lies over the Ocean" right" says I and sat down to play it all the verses, how do you know that she asks, well we sang them all at school from being very young, then did "Keep your feet still Geordie Hinney, Cushy Butterfield, The Keel row, Lambton Worm and Blaydon Races". How many are there? Oh "Sweet lass of Richmond Hill, ilkley Moor Ba Tat, The Durham's, Farmers Boy" it goes on forever she was impressed. I wish I could have heard the conversation with her Teacher at the next session they are quite intense at that age. At least some of the old songs will survive.
When I was a bit younger than your Gdtr I used to come home from school singing songs and my parents used to wonder what I was on about, they knowing the correct words.
London Bridge is burning down ...KEF used to build it up with vire & vice to this day I don't know where that came from but I sang with gusto.
My old Man...KEF had an old cockle innit
I used to sing theme tunes from the television and my fav was from Double your Money.....KEF's version double your money with Charlie Endrich think it might have been Double your Money and get Rich
Not a song but KEF also thought people had vigorous veins
KEF, no TV when I was a lad so no advert tunes for the girls to bowdlerise when they were skipping for hours they went through the local folk songs, " She's a big lass and a bonnie lass and she likes her beer, they call her Cushy Butterfield and I wish she were here". You can imagine the verses to that chorus.
We had singing lessons in school back then and each school had it own choir, I sang solo "Ombre my fu" at the parents meetings until my voice broke, it turned into not to bad a Tenor until it was broken again yelling orders on the parade ground, my Sister once said it turned into a lovely brown voice "err what" well the colour may have been right?
