That's a strange fault, Forester and not one I've heard of.......perhaps the camera contacts need cleaning.
It is a fact that a camera will use less power using the electronic viewfinder, rather than the LCD screen.
My own camera has a clever little sensor that shuts-off the LCD screen when you put your eye to the viewfinder and restores it when you take your eye away from it.
