Thick mist here, cold but above freezing, at least. I'm currently trying to decide what I can leave out of my packing for Ireland (Ryanair, hand luggage only) in order to fit into the bag the big red bus we've bought for our younger granddaughter's birthday...
I wonder what sort of presenter they're looking for on GW? And are we losing a "regular"? I do hope it's not Carol Klein. I know she irritates some people but I find her enthusiasm an inspiration.
Here are just a few snippets to encourage those of us who are feeling a bit down about the state of the world (pinched from The Week, by the way!):
global female literacy reached 93% worldwide last year, up from 40% in the 1970s;
history's worst-ever Ebola epidemic is all but over, and a new vaccine is said to be 100% effective;
free elections and peaceful transfers of power took place in 2015 in countries ranging from Nigeria to Argentina to Myanmar to Burkina Faso;
in the US, in spite of reports of mass shootings, violent crime decreased in 2015.
The writer reckons human beings are hardwired to be pessimistic about the present and nostalgic about the past. (And afraid of the future, perhaps?)
Have a peaceful day folks.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Afternoon all, feel in a bit better mood today, very cold and frosty, think a fire is in order. Got tallons done this morning and then visited a friend for tea and cake.
I really, really want to get started again in the garden but it's just too cold at the moment, hope we get some dry weather when the temperatures increase a little so I can walk on the lawn with damaging it or sinking into it.
Don't normally get involved in anything controversial but if there are any ladies out there who were born in the 1950's and are a bit miffed about the way we have been treated re pensions there is a petition you might like to sign. It can be found at the following site, don't know how to make it a link.
Link works, have signed and sent to several friends. I have a friend who was expecting to receive her pension for the years she had worked when she reached 60. She had stopped working early because of ill health and was finding it hard to make ends meet. Then she got a letter to say she would get her pension at 62 instead, which meant two more years of hardship. I had that letter too, but I wasn't in such an impecunious state.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
...and it means you have to drink some out of it before you can refill it.

Hope this doesn't start any sort of irate debate.
