LG_ This garden has been tough from an OAP perspective. Something I would have found hard work years ago. Once the landscapers left it was all mine and no one elses so I have had to accept the hard work, at one point I did over do it. I decided to take on the challenge and hated the idea of a landscaper planting it with things that held no special interest to me. I now know my soil and how it deal with it in the future.I think that is the best way to start.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
Suze, I've loved this thread and also your kind and informative posts everywhere since you joined.
I know it'd be a lot of work, but if you could restart this thread on the GC forum it would be so very lovely to be able to keep abreast of what you are doing.
I am going to sow hundreds of red cosmos this year, as a last hurrah to my own garden, inspired by a pic you posted last year or the year before of your cosmos!!
@WAMS As I mentioned I was priviledged to work for some amazing gardeners years ago. None of them are now with us, a generation before me. They were always kind enough to take the time and patience to educate me as I worked for them. A wonderful opportunity that I have never forgotton, I have enjoyed writing about some of the things they took time to share with me.
One lady I worked for introduced some new plants including Geranium Mary Mottram and Pulmonaria Joan's Red. I mentioned it on here and amazingly there was a reply to my post from her grandaughter. She thanked me for bringing her grandmother's gardening story back to life. I think that just shows how wonderful the exchange of knowledge can be on a garden forum.
I planted Cosmos Rubenza in my old garden in 2022. I had spent the January when there was no rain at all digging it out. Again I faced small new plants. A 'sea' of Cosmos gave interest whilst the shrubs and perennials got going in year one.

@Bluejayaway I hope so too. My family have been reading this thread and agree it would be great to continue. I think it was the comments from @Fire that peaked their interest! I have very few photos showing the piles of soil as shown at the start. I am in no way down hearted that this will disappear but without photos it would be difficult to go back to the beginning. I have used the forum to spur me on with the heavy work and with the support of other gardeners it has been amazing. Now it is planted I don't feel the same need to keep notes. I shall take some photos over the next few weeks and with a small amount of back ground information there could be the start of something else. My mind is always months ahead with gardening I am already giving thought to a long border at the side of the house......
