    Hi @Fairygirl,

I agree that April can also have iffy days, but some of the smaller bulbs .... such as the mini daffs  ... seem to shrug it off. So I always think of April as the month when we get a nice bit of Spring colour, and a bit of warmth when the sun does put in an appearance.

Oh absolutely @Bee witched. I usually have daffs and hellebores and various bits and bobs at that time of year, and it's nice to see them when the days are difficult.
That's where the species tulips are good too - those searing oranges and bright pinks are a boost  :)

I fell in love with Scotland many years ago, and I'm still in love but in a different way. We holidayed there year after year after year - Dumfries & Galloway, Argyll and the Highlands. My close friend got married and moved to Newton Stewart. For years I could see myself living up there. But you know nowadays as a keen gardener I guess I'm glad I live down here. You seem to have such a short season and are regularly plagued with the extremes of weather. Although I guess on balance your lives are maybe richer?

  • Another Dumfries and Galloway fan here @LunarSea ! I discovered it by chance a few years ago and now return every year (to Colvend / Rockcliffe / Kippford area). For a long time I also thought I wanted to move there, it is such a beautiful part of the world

Yes! My cherry tree was budding before the leaves all fell! My salvias are all coming now, and a cyclamen.

Kippford and Rockcliffe - yes that's where we used to stay! It's about time we paid a return visit to Auchencairn Bay & Screel hill :)

If you want to see the real Scotland, the far NW is the place I go. I have been lucky to travel all over the world, including a few war zones, but the place I feel most at home, is NW Scotland.
How can you lie there and think of England

Indeed @punkdoc. Nothing beats the Highlands and the  north west   :)
South west Scotland is a very, very different beast altogether.

  • I enjoyed holidays in Scotland, particularly because of my interest in castles. Not just the large ones, but the smaller tower-houses and ruined towers. Dumfries and Galloway was one of my favourite areas, and I try to collect old prints and postcards of its castles.
But the beauty of the area could tempt me back for good, if it wasn't for the wife - and the fact I'm not allowed to drive!!

The ground elder is starting to put out new green shoots!

Now that's what I call postive thinking!
