Interestingly the Allium sphaerocephalon bulbs I planted in October have had 6" green shoots up since early December.
That's pretty normal for those :)

I grow C. Beauty - no sign of them yet, so pretty much the norm.

I think people are getting ever so slightly optimistic about spring arriving though  ;)

When I opened the curtains this morning I caught a glimpses of red in the garden. I assumed it was sweetie papers or somesuch (it's been windy, we get litter off the street). But no, Knautia macedonica and an Erysimum whose name I can't remember

  • @JennyJ I have been thinking of getting some Knautia Macedonia after seeing it in a magazine! Beautiful pic/colour, I think I'm sold  :)

It's easy from seed @gilla.walmsley , and self-sows well, so once you have it, you'll always have more (unless you weed them out).
The plants are extremely untidy at this time of year, and I'll probably cut them back before too long and pull out the oldest, scruffiest ones. Tidy gardeners probably do that in the autumn ;)

Very pretty @JennyJ, although I'm really surprised at it being in flower  :)

I'm always meaning to get some of the dark Scabious [same family] but never quite get round to it.

The dark scabious are lovely in a border a great contrast with brighter colours or whites. I think it is only an annual? Never known it survive the winter.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Yes- not hardy @GardenerSuze, which is probably why I put off getting seed  ;)
I got some of the very dark cornflowers [ Centaurea Black Ball ] again to sow for this year, as they give a vaguely similar look, but can last a couple of years if it's warm enough.

  • @Fairygirl I've bought Black Ball to sow this year for the first time too  :) As well as Aloha Blanca and Classic Fantastic . Knautia Macedonia will definitely have to be next year!

It's very easy @gilla.walmsley. I was just looking at a photo of it recently, from the first summer in this new plot,  which is why I bought some. The seed all came last week.  :)

@Lizzie27, and @Fairygirl, didn't know that warmth was a factor. Mine is in the very sunny front garden and is t very big yet.( although planted 2-3 years ago). I can't bring it into the house unfortunately, we don't have the room, but it seems to be quite happy in its place so will put up with no perfume for the nice form it's developed.👍 Thanks for the advise.
