can you provide a photo? You can cut them back. Start up high and cut into it. so long as it's fresh and white, it'll bounce back. If not white, cut down a bit lower until you find fresh flesh
I'd trim off the tatty leaves but leave the growing point intact - this is the youngest leaf in the centre. There's a video on this link which may help you:
