Some beautiful clematis on this post, I especially like Vagabond. Apologies for being so long winded, but I am looking for advice. I'm growing 2 Omoshiro in individual pots for the second year. My first year wasn't very successful resulting in me cutting them right back to the soil before winter. If the leaves had been in better condition I wouldn't have cut it so far down or at that time of year. This year I put spacers behind the trellis so the air could circulate better. I repotted in a mixture of manure, compost and john innes no 3, along with continuous release granules and a small amount of blood fish and bone and topped the pots with horticultural grit. They are growing much better than last year and one of them has got several flowers ready to open any time soon. After reading posts on the forum, I have pinched out a couple of tips on one of them to see what happens. Please can anyone tell me if I need to feed with tomato food ( I haven't done so far this year ) also, do lower leaves usually turn brown? The clematis are not sheltered by other plants and it's quite windy in my back garden. I have posted 2 pictures, sorry but one is sideways I don't know to crop it. I've been following posts on the forum for quite a while and picked up lots of great tips but it's made me realise how much there is to learn... any help will be gratefully received. Many thanks
@TigerFeet ..well, your clematis is looking ok, they are not known for having great foliage, so you really shouldn't worry too much about a few manky leaves here and there, unless the whole plant turns yellow then it might be a chlorosis issue, but yours is doing ok..
You can feed with liquid tomato food. I only have 1 clematis in a pot, I feed it in Spring with slow release ..
Next year, try not pruning your clematis so hard, keep most of the growth and just lightly prune it back to where you see new shoots growing, in early Spring.. pinch out growing tips in early April, and bob's your uncle..
@JessicaS ..also has this clematis so you can compare notes.. Taiga looking good !..
@TigerFeet agreed, they're looking just fine! I think they have enough fertiliser for the moment, I'd be inclined to sit back and let them get on with it at the moment, particularly with there being buds on them. Even though omoshiro is technically a group 2 plant, it doesn't hurt to prune them back hard - all it means is you'll lose the earlier large flowers; those of us with a continental climate (eg @Obelixx) grow all their gp2's this way. Early flowering clematis don't tend to be as vigorous as the later Jackmanii and viticella types and they do take a little longer to establish
@JessicaS . You mention in your post growing a clematis in a large patio pot with some other plants. I am ( if you saw my post ) starting off a baby Supermarket buy and potting on into a big pot where I did think it would look a bit sad. Is there anything specific I should know about planting other plants around it in the pot (ie not disturbing it, any plants to avoid etc)? Thx
@Wjs57 ive got my Andromeda potted with a shrub, pieris which it scrambles through, and I add seasonal bedding plants. Needs tobe deep and topped up with feed and fresh compost regularly.
