When we need it is the simple answer. If we had a cold spell in the middle of Summer we would put it on for a couple of hours. The house retains heat well so it's not generally a problem.
Firstly I'll start by saying I'm always cold...........
Has yours been on? 1 day last month I had it on for a couple of hours, it was sooooo cold and cardigans and blankets were not helping.
Should it be on? I usually have mine on from Oct - March. I don't like the heat on too early or I'll suffer when it gets colder. First sign of coldness is get a hot drink, if that doesn't fix it grab a cardi, then blanket; heating on before Oct is the last resort.
Should we just put on more layers? Yes, I've been wearing light jumpers since July
Is it too early to even think about it? Meh, depends on how you feel the temp and how your house retains the heat
Are you all about comfort and cost be blowed? Are you environmentally and/or cost conscious and would rather wrap up than heat up All about comfort in my home, its the one place we should all feel comfortable. Personally I don't understand why people wear their coats inside their homes rather than putting on heating for a couple of hours.
Before we had kids it wouldn't go on until November but now it will go on whenever their bedrooms get too cold at night. We still have our bedroom window open most of the year so heating the whole house seems like a waste. I've been thinking about getting room heaters for them instead as it would probably be more efficient.
I'm working with a fleece on today but my office is small so if I keep the door shut the computer warms the room up pretty well.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
No, I work alone, and customers don't get to much choice!

No.

Our heating is from a pellet furnace and I have not even bought the fuel yet. In the shoulder seasons where it is to warm to fire up the entire house I use a fan heater for the room I am in.
Had our heating on yesterday. We tend to leave ours on at a lower temperature all year round. If it gets cold it starts up, and stops when the house is back up to temperature. In the past, we have suffered from damp, and have found that if the house dries out, it stays warmer, and the boiler doesn’t have to work as hard or as often. Our bills actually went down doing this, despite us being home more since we retired. Before that, we would have it set to come on before we got up, then off until we were due home. When it gets a lot colder, we just turned the thermostat up a few degrees, then down when we go to bed. We also have a gas fired stove in the living room. The bedroom radiator thermostat is always set lower, as I can’t sleep in a very warm room. Im happy that we are using energy sensibly to achieve the amount of heat we need for comfort, and to stop the house dissolving around us!
Yes - it's false economy to wait until the house is freezing before putting heating on. Boiler uses more energy to heat it up. Ours would be on from September until April - at least. I'm now retired, and refuse to be freezing in my home after spending a great deal of my working life freezing my **** off - both inside and out. My younger daughter often has to be up at 4am for work, so the heating is also tailored for her.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
My gas central heating is 'on' all the time.Thermostat set at around 12°C most of the year but adjusted in the winter when cold. Automatically comes on around 7am and goes off around 11pm.No heating during the night as we are all cosy in bed! We do have an extra 1 hour boost if needed outside those times for either hot water for a late bath or heating if staying up late. All the radiators have individual thermostats My son's bedroom radiator rarely comes on as the hot water pipes are directly under his floor. The kitchen one also rarely goes on either. I have a gas flame fire in the lounge and sometimes even in the winter I have it on low all day and it heats the whole house so the radiators don't come on. there are no set times in the year when heating is off or on it just depends on the temperature at the time. We often wear extra clothes or watch TV with a hot water bottle on our laps! A friend of mine said 'It is not a crime to be warm!'.

We might put it on for an hour or two of an evening if it is especially chilly. But generally it's a case of putting on another layer/socks and snuggling up under a throw to watch tv.
Ours is always on, we just adjust the thermostat when we need it. if it drops cold, it kicks in. The other night was 17c in the holiday flat, the thermostat is set at 19c I think p, so I expect it kicked in there, I don’t know, I was asleep. I’d rather keep the place aired and our system is so cheap to run, boiler running at 98% efficient so I don’t begrudge it.
