Thanks for the hand washing hints, B3. I’m still tempted to wrap a scarf round my head, chuck my smalls in a laundry basket, and head across the road to the little stream behind our neighbours garden! That would certainly cause more talk that just leaving pegs on the washing line!
Luckily, I’ve been a compulsive shopper, and a bit of a hoarder too, so I should have enough clothing, towels and bed linen to keep us neat and fresh until I can get a replacement machine delivered. Then I’ll have a decent backlog to put it through its paces.
I’be really enjoyed this thread. Who would have thought that advice on a washing line colour would have sparked such a flood of reminiscences and funny stories. We should have a regular blast from the past thread in the Potting Shed. I do hope the OP went away happy, and didn’t mind the off topic chat.

I lived in a block of flats which had a communal washing area surrounded by an eight foot wall on 2 sides, the other 2 sides had brick sheds (one per flat) for coal. Access to the washing area was by way of two gunnels. Each flat was allocated 2 lines. Woe betide anyone who 'borrowed' a neighbours line without asking. Most people washed on a Monday and for the rest of the week the lines were empty. No-one left their pegs out!

Thanks for the update, Tack. That dark grey really works well.
What a beautiful garden, those roses are gorgeous.
