@Nanny Beach I'd always imagined Jack Reacher to be a bulked up version of Jim Grant - semi-autobiographical in many ways and what he imagined himself to be in others (Jim certainly loves coffee and dislikes running). In the books he is far taller than Tom Cruise (best part of a foot), way more bulky (between 40-80 pounds), has different hair and eye colour and is less pretty.

I can't watch Tom Cruise playing the role without constantly thinking, "that isn't Jack Reacher, it's Tom Cruise" - a financial decision that has met with strong objections from an awful lot of the fans of the books. I'm looking forward to seeing if the TV series has been cast any better ;)

No-one has mentioned Glenda Jackson playing King Lear.

Biglad,I know Lee Child went to great lengths to tell us what Jack Reacher looked like. You just can't see Tom Cruise fighting off 4 blokes at once. Thankfully I never saw King Lear, I hate costume dramas.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Lear described as a costume drama before 😉

Haha Dove, that's not Glenda Jackson though, those ladies are still costumed,albeit,50s posh frocks. Did they do a version in jeans.

@Nanny Beach the Old Vic production with Glenda Jackson as Lear was in contemporary dress, including jeans … take a look https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2016/nov/13/king-lear-review-glenda-jackson-old-vic

In the books many people back off simply due to be intimidated by the bulk of Jack Reacher.  I can't see that happening with Tom Cruise unless are scared he will bite their ankles or head butt them in the nuts.
