    The main palette I think of is orange and brown floral. We had this in a oil table cloth and as a picnic cool bag.

    Just thinking,  all these rockeries sound familiar.  I work in Felixstowe as a gardener and they are in front of most bungalows! Along with the Heather..... for the record,  it's not my style but then,  I'm not 80 like most Felixstowe residents....yet

    My memories from the 1970’s :
    Was it Adrian Bloom (or one of the Bloom family) that promoted low conifers & heathers ?

    my Grandad planted summer bedding in straight lines and rectangles as you still see in public parks !

    Dahlias were his pride & joy and by each plant he put an upside down plant pot on a cane, stuffed it with dried grass to catch earwigs.  I can picture him now, every morning emptying the pots onto the lawn and stamping on the earwigs 😱.

    Rationing until '52, chicken for lunch on Christmas Day only, as a daily egg was preferable to eating the hen that laid it, but I tend to think back to those heady days when crops grew without raised beds or poly tunnels, and Percy Thrower was the expert.

    Macrame hanging baskets and dinner plate dahlias are big now.roses, hedges,lawns, municipal planting, red, white, blue,low,in the 70s

    Our house was built in the late 60's. There was a 30 foot conifer taking up a big chunk of the flat ground on one side of the house and shading the greenhouse. When I took it down there were lots of odd rocks around the base which weren't local stone. I guess that it started off as a decorative rockery with a "dwarf" conifer. We still have some of the original heather that edges the steps up to the house.

    Love this thread. I can’t really remember what plants my mum used to grow as I only got into gardening very late in the day.  But I did inherit the family home and have loved working in my mum’s beloved garden.  I still have the forsythia (love it) the lilac and the rockery.  The crazy paving patio my dad laid is still there but under the decking.
    I also had a pina colada in the sunshine yesterday and a chicken kiev for dinner 😂 I was born in 62
