I personally don't think it's great to chat with spammers on the various threads. I don't think it does any good, their spam is deleted and then the thread no longer makes sense.
The forum appears on Google and gets millions of views a year, as one of the most globally known gardening brands. People often check in to read threads but never comment. The threads have a lot of utlity outside chatting. I think the greatest usefulness of the forum is as a knowledge archive. And on that front, it makes sense for the threads to make as much linear sense as possible....
I agree with @Fire - by all means reply to new threads started by spammers, as the whole thread will be deleted. However, replying to a spam post added to an existing thread leaves the thread in a bit of a mess for posterity purposes.
