Do folk on here from the medical world know what happens to empty Covid vaccination vials? I would like to put an empty vial in the time capsule I will be placing in my stone wall being built in March but suspect there are protocols in place to ensure vials are treated like chemical waste. Or maybe there is a 4d deposit to be returned like old Tizer bottles!

I do not want to waste the time of the over-stretched local vaccination centre emailing them with such a frivolous question especially if the idea is a non starter.

We got the Vitabiotics ones online  and have been taking them since September. 3 for 2 offer, so we sent a packet to 89 year old Aunty Mo since she hasn't been out since March.  Free delivery, arrived in three days by post office through letterbox.
When they announced free prescriptions for all the vulnerable, I said then that I doubted there was enough in the Pharmacy supply chain. No one I know has been sent a prescription. If you're at risk, for the price of a costa coffee you can have enough for three months.

Holland & Barrett have vit D3 (25 microgram) 250 tablet packs in the penny sale at the moment. No idea how much a Costa coffee is, but I've ordered 500 tablets for £18.50, so 3.7p a day (plus a few other things to get free delivery - the choccy-coated ginger that I like is on offer too - ginger's good for you, right?). Other suppliers and brands available, but this is the cheapest I found this morning.

I picked up 500 25mg D3 tablets from a reputable supplier on eBay for £9.00 including p&p. But I thought if the government wants to send me more for nothing, why not? Payback for a life time of paying my taxes! I’m sure the tablets, if they ever arrive, will keep.

  • My OH was promised free vitamin D tablets too, haven't had any yet.  We have been taking them for awhile now, but like you @BenCotto we thought if the government are sending them why not.  He is clinically vunerable. We haven't been anywhere really for almost a year now.

The vials will likely be disposed of in a sharps bin as the syringes are made-up in a prep area and just that is given to the person administering the vaccine. You could ask at the time though. The Oxford one is a pre-made syringe so they won’t let you have that as will be a ‘contaminated’ needle/sharp waste. They usually give you leaflets, so you put one of those in the time capsule instead.

The empty vials go into burn bins I believe. Also the Oxford vaccine won’t be coming in pre drawn up syringes as first thought, the vaccine will be drawn up from a vial like the Pfizer biontech vaccine.
