Dave, a quiet word with you - most of the regular old timers on this forum are basically (semi)professional gardeners. They've gardened many plots, from farms to allotments to rooftops to extensive woodlands. Some have run or still run their own garden companies. They've read the books, know the authors, done the RHS courses, grappled with every pest and gardening heartbreak going. And day after day they come here and give free advice to everyone that rocks up because they like to share their knowledge and help out. They get the same questions year after year, and field the WUMs, the panicked, the angry. Yes, the forum has its own MO, tone, impatiences, but any functional group has its own culture and foibles.

You've had a clear set of opinions given on JKW. It's doing a lot of damage in the UK. Welcome to the forum.

I have occasionally thought about growing some in a pot, I suppose the way some people panic as if it is going to eat our children then our house, I know the dangers but it is an attractive plant. Any thoughts?
this has been an interesting introduction to the forum, some people seemed to quickly decide I was making mischief, (trolling, flame baiting, WUMing, shitstirring) called an idiot a few times and retarded once, reported!

The first sentence: 'I have occasionally thought' etc was a simple statement of fact: I have occasionally thought about doing it, the second part: 'the way some people panic etc', well I still think there is a bit of overreaction, It may have been taken as criticism, but  haven't seen how it is so bad myself, not nearly as bad as bindweed  or Himalayan Balsam or even brambles. There re two gardens up our street which have JKW and there is clearly no gardening going on, but it hasn't spread significantly in 4 years.

After reading some of the advice here, if someone made the suggestion to me I would say, you are allowed to grow it but there are significant problems so maybe list the good things and the bad things and see which list is most persuasive.

Someone said it was akin to keeping a wild animal, well maybe a monkey not really like a tiger, not sure what the law is regarding the keeping of exotic pets, but again the sensible thing would be to find out the potential problems and either don't do it or if you do, take all reasonable precautions.

The people who seemed to instantly think that you were a troll or a wind up merchant have a habit of doing so which then stirres up a mob mentality when the pals get together. I mean calling someone retarded is disgusting behaviour in anyone's book but these chosen few won't criticise him for such words. Someone on here got on my nerves going on and on and I called her a tit. The gang mentality showed it's face and anyone would have thought I'd have killed someone with the abuse I got including private messages. Calling someone a tit v calling someone a retard which is worse

Looking at my original post for the third time I can see how it appears flippant, a misjudged attempt at humour, so sorry for upsetting/offending folk. I have, believe it or not, found it helpful to think about the issue and have done a bit more research of my own.

Good of you to say so @dave56armstrong 😊

it is sometimes hard to gauge the tone when someone is new to the forum and regulars are not used to their individual style of posting ... and as you may have seen if you look back, we do get regular visits from those who intentionally exploit the goodwiil of regulars by being total pr@ts ... goodness knows why ... but there’s a saying about ‘empty vessels’ that probably fits.
I take it you have a garden?
When not pondering on the merits of growing ‘noxious weeds’ in containers 😉 what do you grow? 😊

Paul - at least you have the good grace to look at what you've said, and act accordingly  :)
I'd still like to know exactly why Dave wants to grow it in the first place, considering the potential problems. I don't think he really explained that.
If he moved house for example, what would he do with it? Take it with him?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
