  • There are unprotected Washingtonia robusta and Phoenix canariensis in Sunderland. The closer to the coast you are the better and providing your not in a frost hollow then you can grow them too. Im in Sunderland and protect my Washingtonia and Phoenix canariensis and have only seen minimal damage in my location over the past 10 years. You can see an unprotected washy opposite Thorburns garden centre down the east end/Hendon and there is a garden on the sea front with date palms and also a few in Ryhope.
