I feel a bit guilty when I squash them and I never torture them to death with salt.

Perhaps l could be an associate member?

    In London. Keen but lazy.

Love it pbff image.  Don't have any photos to share yet.  I have loads of those little "humbug looking" snails from Dove's pic in my garden, along with larger brown shelled ones.

It will be interesting to see what everybody's got around the country.

Lyn, I remember you posting about your snail, he was a magnificent beast ?image.

    Hi

I think I will delay my membership. The slug and the Lilly beatle have been my main nemesis's and they will never be on my christmas card list. But, as the hymn goes "All things bright and beautiful all creatures great and small" . So they may have a right and a reason to be part of natures rich tapestry. But that appreciation ends when all my efforts to protect my plants goes out the window

Happy gardening to all and a very Merry Christmas to all (except slugs) ??

    See original post

Thank you Steve for putting me right on the words.  All these years I've been singing "All creatures grunt and smell".

I do have pictures of my snail, sadly died, but not in vain, his shell is used as an ornament down by the pond, I have seen tadpoles in there sheltering,

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

    Good morning all.

Thanks to pansyface for joining and making us laugh - 'Snails in Comedy' sounds like a good topic for discussion sometime! ?

Philippa - thank you. However, you did encourage me to start this Society, so don't forget that you'll have to take equal share of the blame... I mean, credit!! ?

Sorry to hear about your snail Lyn, but lovely about the tadpoles. See! Another example of just how useful snails are to the environment as a whole!

Are there any more snail supporters out there at all? image

One of my favourite poems that I memorised as a child:

At sunset, when the night-dews fall,

Out of the ivy on the wall

With horns outstretched and pointed tail

Comes the grey and noiseless snail.

On ivy stems she clambers down,

    Carrying her house of brown.

Safe in the dark, no greedy eye

    Can her tender body spy,

While she herself, a hungry thief,

    Searches out the freshest leaf.

She travels on as best she can

    Like a toppling caravan.

    (The Snail by James Reeves)

One can assume that James Reeves liked snails, as he refers to them in a number of his poems. image

I wonder what he might have thought about a Snail Lover's Society?image

    A walk of snails

I hear that there are a variety of different collective nouns for groups of snails - has anyone heard of any others?

Sounds like a good idea Philippa!

So here we are, the first Snail Lover's Society Competition launches today:

Who knows, or can invent, the best collective noun for snails?

After we've had a number of entries, we'll vote for the favourite.

What should the prize be, I wonder? image
